Kunigal: A woman constable has filed a complaint at the Amruthur Police Station alleging that a fellow police constable cheated her with a false promise of marriage, and later got engaged to another woman.
The case has been registered against Bhagawantharaya Biradar (34) and D. Nagabhushan, both attached to the Amruthur police station.
According to the complaint, Biradar, a native of Manapur village, Sindagi taluk, Vijayapura district, and the complainant, a woman constable, were in a romantic relationship while working together at the same police station.
The woman stated that on February 14, 2023, Biradar tied a mangalsutra (sacred wedding thread) around her neck in front of a photo of Sai Baba at her police quarters, indicating a symbolic marriage.
Though the woman constable initially hesitated due to inter-caste differences, Biradar allegedly insisted on continuing the relationship and promised to take care of her, asking her to keep the marriage secret. The two reportedly had a physical relationship based on this promise.
Trouble began when the woman constable wore the mangalsutra to the station one day, which reportedly angered Biradar. When she suggested they legally register their marriage, an argument broke out between them.
Subsequently, Biradar got engaged to a woman from his own community. On learning this, the woman constable informed Nagabhushan D.R., another officer in the same station. Both Nagabhushan and Biradar allegedly went to her quarters, where they demanded proof of marriage. When the woman said she had all the evidence on her mobile phone, Biradar allegedly abused her and created a scene.
The complaint also mentions that Biradar threatened her with defamation and physical harm if she took the matter to higher authorities, including the Superintendent of Police.
Circle Inspector Madhya Nayak confirmed the incident and said an investigation is underway and appropriate legal action will be taken.
