A shooting at a Las Vegas gym late Friday left two people dead, including the suspected gunman, and at least three others injured, police said.
According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Undersheriff Andrew Walsh, gunfire erupted at the Las Vegas Athletic Club on the city’s west side, where one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers responding to the incident shot the suspect as he tried to flee the premises. He was later declared dead at a local hospital.
Three individuals sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals, with one person reported to be in critical condition.
Walsh said that the public is not under a threat anymore while officials try to discern a motive behind the attack.
In a statement to KLAS-TV, eyewitness Claudio Vigani recalled, “They said get out, get out, get out” who was present at the gym when the shooting began. “Then I saw the dead guy next to the machine”, Vigani said.
Gary Steward and another individual were on their way to the gym around the time of the incident. Steward informed the Las Vegas Journal that a detour to a nutrition store inadvertently prevented their being caught in the tragedy, potentially saving their lives.
"It's just a weird feeling right now," Steward said. "It's strange. Who shoots up a gym?"
According to the center for disease control and prevention, nearly 47,000 people have died in the US due to gun-related injuries in 2023. This figure includes gun murders, gun suicides, and other types of less common gun-related deaths, like accidents and undetermined circumstances.
Incidents of school shootings are also a pertinent problem in the country, endangering the lives of the youth.
