NEW DELHI: Hours after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi levelled serious allegations against the Election Commission, claiming large-scale manipulation of voter lists across states, the BJP hit back sharply, calling it an attack on democratic institutions and a sign of political desperation .
Speaking at a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “This is not the first time Rahul Gandhi has attacked a constitutional institution. Why doesn’t he present the voter lists from states where the Congress has won? Why didn’t he bring both of Tejashwi Yadav’s voter cards to today’s press conference?”
The controversy erupted over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise being carried out in Bihar. The Election Commission has clarified that no political party has so far filed any formal objection or complaint in the process, a fact cited by BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya to question the Opposition's claims.
“The INDI Alliance’s opposition to the SIR is nothing but political optics, a desperate attempt to malign the EC and sow mistrust in institutions,” said Malviya. “If they had genuine concerns, where are the formal complaints? Over 60,000 Booth Level Agents from Opposition parties are on the ground, not one has filed a complaint.”
Malviya further said, “Rahul Gandhi continues to parrot baseless claims of ‘vote pilferage,’ but the truth is starker — no one is voting for Congress and its allies. The people have rejected them. But the Yuvraj of Congress refuses to accept this rejection, so he attacks the system instead.”
Union minister Ramdas Athawale also dismissed the allegations, saying, “The EC is an independent body. They have no links with the government. If Rahul Gandhi has concerns, he should go to the EC and present his side. The voter list is prepared under EC’s purview.”
BJP MP Kiran Choudhry added, “Sabotaging is a speciality of the Congress party. They lose elections due to nepotism and then blame BJP. It is unfortunate that Rahul Gandhi is raising questions on the EC when it doesn't suit him.”
Bar Council of India Chairman and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra echoed similar views: “Nobody cares about what Rahul Gandhi says. When Congress wins, EC is good. When they lose, it becomes bad. What he says doesn’t impact the public.”
However, CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar strongly backed Rahul Gandhi, saying, “This is not just his allegation, the entire Opposition is saying the same. The EC is not a holy cow. They never accept our proposals. The EC is helping the government pave its way for a Hindu Rashtra. We fully support Rahul Gandhi’s allegations.”
At his press conference, Rahul Gandhi stood by his remarks. “This is EC’s data, not ours. They haven’t denied it. Why haven’t they said the voter lists are wrong? Because they know we have the truth,” he said.
Claiming there’s a “criminal fraud” being committed on Indian democracy, Rahul added, “We have given crystal clear, bulletproof proof. The EC is not attacking me because they know what I’m saying is true. They are destroying evidence. We’re showing the pattern, this is being done state after state. It’s nothing less than a crime against the Constitution.”
He further said, “The EC is not supposed to destroy Indian democracy but protect it. This isn’t just about one list, this is evidence of a nationwide pattern.”
