Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday took on the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 and the National Herald case against Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.
The grand old party's president slammed the saffron party for "spreading rumours" on Waqf issue and claimed that Congress "brought together entire opposition against Waqf bill", adding that the Supreme Court gave "importance to points raised" by them.
"Congress brought together entire opposition against Waqf Bill; all INDIA bloc constituents supported us. Supreme Court has given importance to points raised by Congress, other opposition parties on Waqf," he said.
"Government, BJP leaders left no stone unturned in spreading rumours on Waqf issue; we have to go among people and expose BJP's conspiracy," he added.
He was speaking at a party meet with general secretaries, in-charges and heads of all frontal organisastions in the national capital.
'Done out of vendetta': Kharge on National Herald case
Kharge alleged political vendetta behind the Enforcement Directorate's actions, claiming the naming of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in its chargesheet and the attachment of National Herald properties were driven by malice.
"Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi named in ED chargesheet, National Herald properties attached- all this done out of vendetta," he said. "Cannot be mere coincidence that ED action came immediately after AICC session," he added.
The ED filed a chargesheet in the National Herald money laundering case, paving the way for possible criminal charges and trial against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. The case involves alleged proceeds of crime worth Rs 5,000 crore. A special court has set April 25 to decide on taking cognisance of the chargesheet. Sonia and Rahul, named as the first two accused, are currently out on bail after failing to have the ED proceedings quashed.
