JAMMU: Kathua Police on Wednesday detained a habitual criminal under the Public Safety Act days after an assistant sub-inspector was mowed down by the speeding vehicle of cattle smugglers.
Abdul Gani, the notorious cattle smuggler, is resident of Maggar Khad in Kathua. He has 10 FIRs registered against him under the Arms Act and Prevention of Cruelty against Animals. A dossier was prepared against him and sent to the DM, who issued a detention warrant, police said.
Meanwhile, in two separate cases, police rescued 20 bovine animals. In Udhampur, Mohd Rafi was arrested and 13 cattle were rescued from him. In Reasi, seven animals were rescued from a vehicle. The driver, however, managed to escape.
