Travel experts are recommending the quiet island of Milos, part of the Cyclades group, as an ideal off-season escape not too far from the UK. While temperatures are plunging to the low 10s in Britain, there are gorgeous areas in Europe where the heat and sunny weather persist. Among these is Milos, in Greece.
"Travellers often think of Santorini first, but Milos delivers the same beauty with much fewer people," said a Ski Vertigo spokesperson. "With daytime temperatures around 24°C and pleasant sea conditions, October is the perfect time to explore its beaches and villages at a relaxed pace." Milos is known as the "Island of Colours," thanks to its volcanic cliffs, turquoise waters and traditional villages, like Klima and Mandrakia, painted in vivid primary tones. The island has more than 70 distinct beaches. Sarakiniko beach is like landing on the moon, due to its white volcanic rock. Tsigrado Beach is great for adventure seekers, with a fun rope ladder descent. Agia Kyriaki and Paliochori are ideal for those seeking quiet coastal spots.
The capital, Plaka, is a hilltop town with narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed homes. It offers one of the best sunset views in the Aegean.
Local food is a star feature with a rich history, tavernas serve grilled seafood, pitarakia (cheese pies), and honey-soaked desserts alongside a glass of local wine.
Milos has lots to do. Visitors can explore Kleftiko and Sykia caves by boat, see the Roman theatre, and walk through the early Christian catacombs.
The Mining Museum tells the story of the island's mineral heritage, while charming villages such as Pollonia, Tripiti and Zefyria reveal authentic Cycladic life.

The island is also important in the history of art. The Venus de Milo (now in the Louvre), the Poseidon of Melos (now in the NAMA) and the Asclepius of Milos (now in the British Museum) were all found on the island, as was an archaic Apollo now in Athens.
Milos has a small airport with regular flights from Athens, operated by SKY Express and Olympic Air. The flight takes about 45 minutes.
Ferries from Piraeus Port in Athens run several times daily, taking around three to five hours depending on the vessel. There are also connections from nearby islands such as Santorini, Paros, and Naxos.
