Nightreign developer FromSoftware has given fans fresh hope of a two-player co-op mode for the future.
One of the biggest disappointments with Elden Ring Nightreign is that while the game can be played in single-player, the multiplayer component is for three people only.
According to game director Junya Ishizaki, the lack of two-person multiplayer was something of an oversight, and could be rectified in a future update.
Speaking to IGN about the lack of two-player, Ishizaki said: "The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that.
"As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it's at the core of Nightreign.
"Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start. And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed."
Ishizaki then hinted at a post-release update for the "overlooked and neglected the duos aspect", which is exciting news for players who want to play with a friend.
Set in a universe parallel to the events of Elden Ring, Nightreign players must "outlast a three day-and-night cycle", culminating in a boss battle at the end of the adventure.
It's described as a "condensed action RPG", where players will never experience the same journey twice.
There's a roguelike element to the game, with players earning relics to to customise and upgrade their characters for future runs and increase stats.
The action is also limited to a version of Elden Ring starting area Limgrave, although it looks like the locations will shift during each playthrough.
