A British man has died after reportedly being assaulted in the Algarve resort of Lagos.
He is said to have been kicked or punched in the head in the town's bar and nightclub area.
The attack happened around 3am this morning.
The dead man, believed to be aged 60, was assisted at the scene by emergency medical responders who tried to revive him.
He was pronounced dead after being rushed to Lagos Hospital.
Paramedics, firefighters and officers from Portugal's PSP police force responded to the emergency call.
It was not immediately clear today if any arrests have been made.
A PSP official was not able to say whether he lived in Portugal or was on holiday in the area and where he was from in the UK.
He said around midday today local time: "He died in hospital in Lagos following an assault.
"We have a suspect who is Portuguese who is with police at the moment but I am not able to say whether he has been formally arrested at this stage."
Another said officers from Portugal's Policia Judiciaria force were now working on the case and the police focus was on obtaining the evidence needed to take the principal suspect before a judge on Monday.It is not yet clear if the assault took place inside a nightspot or in the street. Police have not gone into details about the incident although the dead man is understood to have suffered severe head injuries.
