Alex de Minaur's Grand Slam quarter-final woes continued at the US Open. The Australian is now 0-6 when he reaches the last eight at a Major, and he felt he'd wasted a big opportunity after suffering a 4-6 7-6 7-5 7-6 defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday.
The No. 8 seed failed to convert a set point in the second set, then blew a 5-2 lead in the fourth. While De Minaur knows there are positives to take from his run in Flushing Meadows, he confessed he was "seeing red" after blowing the chance to reach his first Major semi-final.
"Right now, I'm looking at this like a wasted opportunity. It's tough. There's no other way I'm probably gonna deal with this, but just seeing it straight, and that's what today was," the 26-year-old said after losing a gruelling four-hour and 10-minute match.
"Today was an opportunity to break new ground. I was nowhere near the level I needed to be at. That's frustrating, because you don't get these chances often."
In his previous Grand Slam quarter-finals, De Minaur lost to Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner. He also gave Novak Djokovic a walkover at Wimbledon last year.
Draper is the only man on that list never to have reached a Major final, and De Minaur felt that he could have done more to beat Auger-Aliassime on Tuesday.
He continued: "Yeah, I mean, it is very tough when you have worked so hard for something and you constantly are putting yourself in positions to, in a way, prove people wrong, right?
"But yet again, you kind of fall, and especially this time, it's a tough one to take. I mean, there is no beating around the bush. It's one of those matches that I would love to play again.
"There are other times that the opponent has a lot to say, and you know, I have played quarter-finals where I played Jannik, and he was just too good, right, and there's not really much I could have done.
"But I feel like this one was on my racket, and it is a shame. I don't know how I'll handle it. I'm definitely, as of right now, seeing red, but yeah, I'll get over it. It's just tennis, right?"
The Aussie still has a lot to be thankful for after exiting in the quarter-finals. This time last year, he was battling an adductor injury that forced him to pull out of Wimbledon. It was still having an effect on De Minaur's game through to the end of the season.
Now, the world No. 8 is healthy and has a good chance to fight for a place at the ATP Finals in Turin. De Minaur reached the season-ending championships last year after Djokovic opted not to play, freeing up an extra spot.
The eight players who have earned the most points in a single season are given a place in the prestigious tournament, and De Minaur will leave New York in the top eight of the race.
