In a surprising turn after India's bowling struggles in the Manchester Test, Team India's bowling coach Morne Morkel has made a startling revelation about Anshul Kamboj’s role in the squad. While Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and Kamboj together managed just three wickets for 297 runs in 72 overs, Morkel hinted that Kamboj was never intended to be a strike bowler.
“Kamboj Was Picked to Support Bumrah and Siraj”In the post-match press conference after Day 3, Morkel said:
"We needed someone who could bowl fast and hit a consistent off-stump line. Kamboj was doing that well at the domestic level and impressed on India A’s tour to England."
However, Kamboj’s performance has disappointed, with his speed hovering around 130 kmph, far below expectations for a frontline pacer. Despite replacing Prasidh Krishna, Kamboj has taken only one wicket and struggled to trouble the English batters.
Selection Draws CriticismThe team management is facing heavy criticism for fielding Kamboj over more experienced options. His modest pace and lack of penetration have raised questions about India's bowling strategy in this high-stakes series.
Manjrekar Comes to Kamboj’s DefenseFormer India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, however, came out in support of the young pacer. He praised Kamboj’s smooth bowling action and said:
“There’s room in Test cricket for bowlers under 130 kmph if they can master back-of-length and good-length consistency.”
Manjrekar also pointed out that the pitch became unresponsive by Day 2, which could have limited Kamboj’s effectiveness.
What This Means for IndiaWith England gaining the upper hand and India’s bowling attack looking toothless, questions are being raised not just about Kamboj's selection, but also about how the team is managing its bowling resources mid-series.
