Liverpool make final decision on late Marc Guehi transfer amid £40m standoff

Liverpool are growing in confidence that they could seal a sensational late deal for Marc Guehi. The Reds have chased the England man all summer as a replacement for Jarrell Quansah, who completed a £35m move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Guehi is out of contract next summer, leaving Crystal Palace in a vulnerable position. Eagles chairman Steve Parish is aiming to receive around £40m should they choose to sell, albeit Liverpool want to negotiate that price down.

As it stands, Liverpool are the only club seriously pursuing Guehi ahead of Monday’s deadline but Manchester City could enter the picture should the defender be available to leave next summer.

Palace turned down £70m for Guehi last summer from Newcastle but Parish has recently admitted that his side could be forced to cash-in as opposed to getting nothing. He said: "We'd have to do that, of course.

"For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it's a problem for us unfortunately. Joachim [Andersen] went [to Fulham last summer] and we couldn't afford to lose both.

"We then had another bid [for Guehi] in January but that was a different situation. We'll just have to see what happens. But, you know, it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind."

Palace are set to make a decision over Guehi’s future once Thursday’s Europa Conference League play-off with Fredrikstad is out of the way. But they are already looking for potential replacements.

Guehi, 25, joined Palace from Chelsea in 2021 for a reported £18m having impressed on loan with Swansea City. He has gone on to make 158 appearances for the club and helped the side to win the FA Cup last season.

Guehi could potentially become the second high-profile exit from Selhurst Park this summer following Eberechi Eze’s £67.5m move to Arsenal. Meanwhile, Liverpool don’t just have the defender in their sights.

Reds chiefs are also keen on sealing a stunning move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak ahead of Monday’s deadline. Newcastle remain determined to keep him, albeit clear-the-air talks ahead of the weekend defeat to Liverpool failed to produce a resolution.

Should those two deals go through, it would take Liverpool’s summer spending to just under £450m. Arne Slot’s side are back in action this weekend as they take on title rivals Arsenal at Anfield.
