Bhanjaran (Gypsy) Dance of Textiles- TRANSEASONAL 25/26
The story of the wandering bhanjaran collecting textiles, pieces of ornamentation, embroidery and adorning color through jewelry and tattoo comes alive in this trans seasonal collection for Amethyst Chennai.
A tribute to “Gulabi the bhanjaran” and Shady Zappa, my two gypsy inspirations through the years who have deeply influenced my work.
Gulabi lives in the camps which are on the outskirts of Delhi and Shady is a Roma gypsy from Europe, who was one of my first eclectic friends to open my eyes to the wonders of travel, craft magic, dreamscape and storytelling.
Playing through colors and different weaves, this story of movement and cultural linkages has been artistically captured by Artist photographer – Ajay Shanker on renowned Dancer and Model- Shreyasi Gopinath and gorgeous style icon Deepa Gopinath.
Constructing silhouettes based on the dance of the weave, blending textiles like Eri silk, Vintage Ikats, bandhini crepe and khadi with tribal and traditional embroidery based on Mythic Bird of paradise all resonate in harmony.
Cross cultural linkages have always been my calling between craft and textile drawing out the diversity of our emotions, our rivers, our weaves and our people who have always travelled between lands (entre- tierras) much like the wandering gypsy.
Observing rituals and juxtaposing attributes through intimate craft as a tribute to their tribe, their people is where living tradition becomes real to their ethos.
“Dance too has travelled through the worlds in the gypsies”, Shady mentioned while speaking and explaining the gestures of flamenco and their nuances and resonance with our forms of dance He spoke their language which was a mix of Roma, Central Asian and Hindi.
Somewhere this story has become one’s own story of influences be it the silk route, travel experiences or abstract music capturing this wandering spirit into my own internal being, living my mixed heritage through textiles craft traditions enveloping a deeper process.
Living between worlds has made me conscious of the undercurrent of life that transcends time much like the gypsy spirit that travels the desert in search of the ocean awakening to a different life recollecting strands of one past through craft into a new future embedded deep, echoing textiles of the nomad land.
