While Goa’s monsoon days are lush and full of life, the real magic begins after sunset, especially in the deep hinterlands, and along the edges of the Western Ghats, where the forests whisper ancient secrets.
When darkness falls and the rain pours, the wilderness starts to stir in a different way which most never get to see. But, for those who dare to venture out after dark, they are in for surprises galore.

Mrugaya Xpeditions, led by naturalist Parag Rangnekar, offers nature lovers a rare chance to witness Goa’s mysterious nocturnal world. Their guided night trails take you on a journey through lesser-known trails, revealing a different side of the State.
“This is a good time for reptiles, amphibians, and all kinds of insect life,” says Parag. “During the night trails, you might see the hump-nosed pit viper, which is endemic to the , various bush frogs, spiders, and a wide variety of insects," he informs.

"But, more than just spotting them, we focus on education. We talk about the habitat and the behaviour of these nocturnal creatures. So, the we organise are about awareness and learning.”
The night trails take place from 6 pm to 9 pm and are designed to be both informative and safe. They are done in small groups of at least two people, and cost Rs 1,600 per person, plus 5 percent GST.
SAFETY, A PRIORITY
Parag explains that while out in the night, safety is a top priority. “We ensure everyone wears proper shoes and carries a torch. We don’t venture into thick forests or protected areas. Our trails are mostly along clean, wide mud roads. These are well-known paths, not risky or rough terrain. It's very suitable for all age groups.”
He adds that these trails are especially . “We love having children along. They’re curious and eager to learn. Education is a very important part of what we do. Through these experiences, kids grow up with more respect for the environment.”
Alongside the wildlife trails, Mrugaya Xpeditions also offers bioluminescence trails—a magical experience where parts of the forest floor glow in the dark, thanks to naturally occurring light from fungi and other organisms.

“During regular night trails, you might spot some bioluminescence here and there,” Parag explains. “But for those who want a full glowing experience, we have specific bioluminescence trails. These are more striking and designed to highlight that glowing forest magic.”
He informs that the bioluminescence trails are available from July to when the conditions are just right.
“Even on those trails, we don’t just show you the glow and then leave—it’s a full nature walk. You’ll still see frogs, insects, and more along the way. The only difference is that the ‘showstopper,’ so to speak, is the glowing forest floor.”
All trails are conducted outside protected forest areas, in accordance with wildlife regulations.

“You're not allowed to enter forest reserves at night, and we respect that,” Parag says. “All our trails are done in non-protected areas, where we still find plenty of biodiversity to explore.”
