Bhopal: Over 30% High-Rise Buildings Unsafe, Lack Basic Fire Safety Systems; Crackdown Soon

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A fire safety crisis is unfolding in Bhopal as an ongoing inspection by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s Fire Department has found that more than 30% of the city’s high-rise buildings lack basic fire safety systems.

Officials said the actual number could be far higher once the full survey concludes in mid-July. Since May 19, the fire department has inspected over 100 buildings above 30 metres, many of which were found with either non-functional or missing fire-fighting systems.

The team is now preparing to take strict action against the violators. The inspection drive covers all residential and commercial buildings, including private hospitals, and involves a zone-wise audit by 11 sub-fire stations.

The systems are tested under simulated fire conditions—automatic water discharge is expected when smoke is detected. Buildings failing this test are declared non-compliant. Inspectors are also reviewing evacuation routes and emergency plans.

The survey was paused for five days due to the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but it is scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

Faulty or outdated firefighting equipment found during the survey is being repaired or replaced immediately by the department.

Zone-wise tests, drills

A team from 11 sub-fire stations is inspecting buildings zone by zone. Fire alarms, sprinkler systems and smoke detectors are being tested using mock fire scenarios. If no water discharge occurs after smoke detection, the system is marked as non-functional. Inspectors are also checking evacuation plans and accessible exits.

I-T building sets benchmark

The Income Tax building in Arera Hills emerged as a standout during inspections. It was found to have the best-maintained fire safety system in Madhya Pradesh, featuring a fully functional setup along with a dedicated evacuation gallery—a rare compliance example in the city.

Notices within a week

Additional Commissioner Devendra Singh Chauhan said that a list of non-compliant buildings is being finalised. Starting next week, the fire department will begin issuing official notices. Fire Safety Officer Saurabh Kumar Patel said that the final report will be released within 15 days, once the ongoing survey is complete.
