New Delhi: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will visit the US starting Sunday to attend the Spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank among other engagements, the finance ministry said on Saturday.
In the course of the visit from April 20 to 25, she will also participate in the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meetings, huddle with her counterparts from the US and other countries, deliver a keynote address at the Stanford University and interact with top investors.
Her visit comes at a crucial time when global economic growth faces significant downside risks from an escalating trade war between the US and China following the Trump administration's extra tariff on the second-largest economy and Beijing's retaliatory duties. Meanwhile, the US has paused additional tariffs on dozens of other countries, including India, for 90 days, opening up the scope for trade negotiations.
She will first have a two-day sojourn in San Francisco before leaving for Washington DC.
In Washington DC from April 22 to 25, Sitharaman will participate in the International Monetary and Financial Committee plenary and the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable meeting as well, according to the ministry's statement.
On the side lines of the Spring meetings, Sitharaman will hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts from the US, the UK, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, Argentina and Bahrain.
She will also huddle with the EU commissioner for financial services, the presidents of the Asian Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the United Nations Secretary-General's special advocate for financial health, and the IMF's first deputy managing director.
Visit to Peru
From the US, Sitharaman will visit Peru from April 26 to 30 to highlight strengthening bilateral economic and trade relations. She is expected to meet Peru's President Dina Boluarte, and Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen, besides holding bilateral meetings with the Peruvian ministers of finance and economy, defence, energy and mines, according to the finance ministry statement.
