Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with visiting US Vice President JD Vance on April 21 in Delhi, amid ongoing efforts to finalise a bilateral trade agreement. On the agenda reportedly are strategies for enhancing the global strategic partnership between India and the United States, alongside addressing New Delhi's apprehensions regarding Washington's trade policies.
Vance and his family arrived in Delhi this morning for a four-day visit to India, having just returned from a trip to Italy over the weekend. This trip marks the first time in 12 years that a sitting US vice president has visited India, with the last being Joe Biden's visit to New Delhi in 2013.
At their meeting, PM Modi recalled his successful visit to Washington D.C. in January and his talks with President Trump. The two leaders also followed up on the February Paris meeting and reviewed the progress in bilateral ties.
They welcomed progress in the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement and efforts towards enhancing cooperation in energy, defence, strategic technologies, a release by PIB said.
The two leaders exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest. Modi extended best wishes to the Vice President and family for a pleasant stay, and conveyed greetings to President Trump and said he looked forward to his visit to India later this year.
Vance's inaugural trip to India comes shortly after US President Donald Trump implemented and subsequently suspended a comprehensive tariff regime affecting around 60 nations, including India.
Currently, New Delhi and Washington are in discussions aimed at finalising a trade deal that is expected to tackle various concerns, including tariffs and access to markets.
In addition to Delhi, Vance and his family plan to visit Jaipur and Agra during their stay.
