Individuals holding the UAE Golden Visa can switch jobs without affecting their long-term residency, but they must obtain a valid work permit for new employment. The Golden Visa, launched in 2019 for investors, entrepreneurs, and high-skilled professionals, provides self-sponsored residency not tied to any employer.
According to Article 7 of Federal Decree Law and Article 6(1)(j) of Cabinet Resolution, as cited by The Times of India, Golden Visa holders can work legally only after the new employer applies for a work permit through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). “Golden Visa holders permit is issued upon request by a registered establishment wishing to hire such an employee,” the law states.
The visa also allows employment during probation periods without the usual restrictions.
How to transition to a new job
Golden Visa holders follow a simple process when changing jobs:
1. Current employer cancels existing work permit: The residency visa remains unaffected
2. New employer applies for Golden Visa work permit: The application includes a signed employment contract and relevant documents submitted to MoHRE
3. Start working: Employment begins once the new work permit is approved.
Required documents include a valid passport, Golden Visa copy, employment contract, recent photo, attested academic certificates, and professional license if applicable.
Advantages for employees and employers
For employees, the Golden Visa ensures uninterrupted residency, family stability, and flexibility to explore new opportunities. Employers benefit from faster onboarding, reduced visa responsibilities, and access to high-skilled professionals already holding long-term residency.
The system also supports UAE’s broader strategy to attract global talent by decoupling residency from employment and encouraging career mobility in sectors like science, research, business, and real estate.
Employment transition challenges
Some legal experts indicate potential challenges, including delays in cancelling work permits, inconsistent HR knowledge, and documentation uncertainties. Coordination with MoHRE or authorised service providers is essential to avoid such delays.
The Golden Visa program is particularly beneficial for property investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, researchers, and outstanding students.
Regardless of job changes, the residency visa remains valid, while only the work permit is updated for new employment.
