Factors Influencing Fuel Prices in India

The prices of petrol and diesel are influenced by several factors. Crude oil prices, which serve as the primary raw material for producing petrol and diesel, are the main determinant of fuel costs. Fluctuations in global crude oil prices directly impact fuel prices in India. Moreover, the exchange rate between the Indian rupee and the US dollar also plays a crucial role, as India imports a significant portion of its crude oil. A weaker rupee often leads to higher fuel costs. Additionally, taxes imposed by both central and state governments contribute to the final price consumers pay at the pump, with these taxes varying across different states. Refining costs, which are incurred when converting crude oil into usable fuel, and the balance of supply and demand further shape the prices.

To make it easier for consumers to check the current fuel prices, oil companies also provide SMS services. By sending a specific message, customers of Indian Oil, BPCL, or HPCL can quickly receive the latest fuel rates in their cities.
